Students at Grout Explore Math, Art, and Electricity

Thanks to funds raised by EFNW member companies as part of the 2006-07 Education Initiative, 60 students at DS Grout Elementary School are getting the opportunity to explore math, art, and electricity in-depth through Saturday Academy.

Saturday Academy provides educational enrichment to over 5,000 students throughout the Portland metro area each year. EFNW companies have made it possible for Saturday Academy to hold classes at Grout Middle School.

Here is what Grout students are enjoying:

Electricity: Motors, Magnets and Wires

Students discover how electricity propels objects into motion as they build a functioning electric motor.

Students explore how current is converted in everyday objects such as cell phones, doorbells, food processors and a car’s starter. Then they construct electromagnets to discover the relationship between voltage, current and magnetic force. Finally, they build motion transducers that change motion to electricity and back again.

“We made motors and chimes and each day we made something new. It was fun!

Art: Drawing and Painting

Students experiment with various artistic media asthey learn to apply the fundamentals of art: line, composition, shape, space, and color. They look at the work of various artists and explore their techniques. Then they create a final masterpiece in the genre of their choice. They may choose to do a self portrait, a portrait of another person or your pet, a landscape or dreamscape, or a still life using props and objects that they select for their own personal meaning.

"This was an awesome class.  I was so sad when it was over.  I made all kinds of art that is in my house.”

Math Artistry

Students expand their understanding of math concepts as they enhance your artistic ability.

Students use their imagination and creativity in a variety of artistic activities as they learn and apply math concepts such as symmetry, fractions, decimals, number patterns and measurement. Students apply their math skills by making a class quilt and creating and deciphering a secret code. Projects also include designing and painting tiles and creating a portfolio of inventive “Math Art.”

"This class is fun.  We are making giant paper mache masks.”
